Southern Nash High School, along with its Athletics Hall of Fame Committee, is excited to announce the first-ever class in the newly established Southern Nash High School Athletics Hall of Fame. Eight individuals comprise the 2025 class, each standing as some of the most successful student-athletes and coaches in the school’s 56 year history. “The creation of the hall of fame has been a goal for a long time and we’re so pleased to have everything underway. The hardest part about beginning a hall of fame is that you can’t get all of the deserving individuals in the first class – or even the first five,” said Athletics Director Robbie Kennedy. “But the Hall of Fame Committee did an excellent job with the inaugural class. We’re looking forward to honoring them and setting the tone for inductions in years to come.” Members of the Class of 2025 are: ROSALIE E. BARDIN – Coach/Administrator (1973-1997, 2004-2010) A respected teacher and coach for 24 years before returning to serve as a principal for six years, Rosalie Bardin’s coaching career is highlighted by the 1995 NCHSAA 3A state title in slow-pitch softball. The next season, her team was the 3A state runner-up in the newly adopted fast-pitch discipline. A member of the NCHSAA Hall of Fame, her resume includes numerous team conference championship titles in multiple sports, earning her Coach of the Year honors across several decades. QUIANA “MEKA” BATTLE – Student-Athlete (1996-2000) A track and field stand-out, Meka Battle is the most decorated female track and field athlete in school history. Earning four individual or relay state championship titles and additional seven All-State recognitions, Meka’s marks in the horizontal jumps remain on school, state and national leaderboards. She was a 3-time conference championship meet Most Outstanding Performer and her jersey was retired. She signed a track and field grant-in-aid to compete with East Carolina University, where she is still on all-time performance lists. RAY DAVIS – Coach/Administrator (1986-2006) In his 20 years as a coach, teacher and athletics director, Ray Davis was at the helm of a number of teams, including JV baseball, football, wrestling and softball. He was named the AP North Carolina Football Coach of the Year, and his teams won multiple conference championship titles. In his time as athletics director, soccer and swimming were added to the competitive slate and the school won the 1996-97 Conference Wachovia Cup for best overall athletics program. BRIAN FOSTER – Coach (1990-2021) Brian Foster served as a dedicated Firebird teacher and coach for over 30 years. He was named a Conference Coach of the Year 12 times in his career, with dominant eras in football and women’s outdoor track and field. His football teams were multi-time conference champions, with the 2019 football team finishing the season as state runner-up. His women’s track and field teams also won multiple consecutive conference and regional titles, finishing as the 3A state meet runner-up twice. DERRICK “BUJI” HIGH – Student-Athlete (1995-1999) The only Southern Nash track and field athlete to be named a NCHSAA state meet Most Outstanding Performer, Derrick High was a successful athlete in football and men’s basketball as well. A multiple-time state, regional and conference sprint champion, Buji’s jersey was retired for being a key part of the Firebird track success in that era. He competed successfully for both Western Carolina University and NC State University, and still appears on all-time lists at both schools. JULIUS PEPPERS – Student-Athlete (1994-1998) Julius Peppers was named the NCHSAA Male Athlete of the Year his senior year and is the only Southern Nash athlete to have a jersey retired in two different sports. A three-sport athlete, he was an All-American in football and was a member of the state championship outdoor track and field team in 1998, running a leg of the championship 4×400 relay. He signed to play football at UNC-Chapel Hill, going on to complete a monumental 17-year NFL career. ANNA THARRINGTON – Student-Athlete (1995-1999) Anna Tharrington was a three-sport standout, earning repeat conference Player of the Year honors in both softball and volleyball. Also her class valedictorian, Tharrington is the second of only two student-athletes named as the NCHSAA Athlete of the Year in Southern Nash history. She is also the only softball athlete to have her jersey retired. She signed a softball athletic grant-in-aid to play for UNC-Chapel Hill where she was a member of the 2001 ACC Championship team. ALTON E. TYRE – Coach (1989-2006) In a Firebird teaching and coaching career that spanned 17 years, Alton Tyre’s back-to-back NCHSAA 3A Men’s Outdoor Track and Field titles are the pinnacle of a dominant stretch in Southern Nash men’s track and field under his direction. His men’s outdoor track and field teams won 63 consecutive dual meets, and won numerous consecutive regional, conference championship and regular season titles. His men’s and women’s cross country programs also earned 5 conference titles. The class will be enshrined during a banquet event on the evening of April 12,2025. A limited number of tickets will be placed on sale to the public in early February. Nominations for future classes are currently being accepted at https://tinyurl.com/snhofnomination.
